Poeta francés. Inspirado en un inicio por un romance fallido, publicó eufónicos y melancólicos poemas en volúmenes que comienzan con Estancias y poemas (1865), que incluye su conocida pieza Le Vase brisé [La vasija rota]. Más tarde adoptó la poética más objetiva de los Parnasianos e intentó representar conceptos filosóficos en su poesía. Entre sus obras posteriores se destacan La Justice [La justicia] (1878) y La Bonheur [La dicha] (1888). En 1901 recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura, en detrimento de figuras mucho más admiradas mundialmente, como León Tolstói.
